What is progressive baccarat?
Progressive baccarat is the classic casino card game with one extra feature: an optional side bet linked to a jackpot. A small part of every side bet goes into the prize pool, so the jackpot keeps growing until a player lands the winning combination. That growing number is what draws players in.
The main game works exactly like regular baccarat. You can ignore the jackpot completely and still play normally.
Baccarat rules in 60 seconds
Two hands are dealt: the Player and the Banker. You bet on which hand will finish closer to 9, or on a Tie.
- Cards 2 to 9 count at face value, aces count as 1, and 10s and face cards count as 0.
- Only the last digit of the total counts. A 7 and an 8 make 15, which counts as 5.
- Whether a third card is drawn is decided by fixed rules, not by the players. You don't make any choices after you bet.
| Bet | Pays | House edge (8 decks) |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1:1 minus 5% commission | about 1.06% |
| Player | 1:1 | about 1.24% |
| Tie | usually 8:1 | about 14.4% |
How the progressive side bet works
To join the jackpot you place a fixed side bet before the cards are dealt. The jackpot pays when a specific rare combination appears. What counts as the winning combination is set by each casino or game provider. Common examples are certain suited card combinations, or a natural 9 made with specific cards.
Many versions also pay smaller fixed prizes for less rare results, so you sometimes win something back without hitting the top prize.
Always open the pay table before you play. Two progressive baccarat tables can look the same and pay very different amounts.
Why players love it
- A chance at a big win from a low-risk, slow-paced game.
- Easy to play: no decisions to make, so it suits beginners.
- Excitement on every hand: even a hand you lose on the main bet can still hit a side prize.
- Live dealer versions online make it feel close to a real casino table.
The catch: side bet odds
The main baccarat bets are among the fairest in the casino. The progressive side bet is not. Its house edge is usually far higher than the Banker or Player bet, because the jackpot combination is so rare. The bigger the jackpot grows, the better the side bet becomes, but in most cases it still favours the house.
Think of the side bet as paying a small fee for a lottery-style chance at a big prize.
Smart ways to play progressive baccarat
- Make Banker your main bet. It has the lowest house edge in the game.
- Skip the Tie bet. The payout looks generous, but the odds are poor.
- Keep the side bet small compared with your main stake, and only place it when the jackpot is large.
- Set a session budget and stop when it's gone, whatever happens with the jackpot.
- Ignore betting systems. Patterns on the scoreboard don't predict the next hand; every hand is independent.
Progressive baccarat vs regular baccarat
If you only care about the best odds, regular baccarat with Banker bets is the better choice. If you enjoy the thrill of chasing a jackpot and accept paying a bit extra for it, the progressive version adds excitement without changing the game you already know.
